In early 2004, Cole Media Group was approached by a prominent doctor/chiropractor from the New York City area. Dr. William Grosso had invented a revolutionary product to relieve back pain. After using the product for years on many of his patients, he felt it was time to bring the product to market so he contacted us. As a result, Dr. Grosso’s Back Relief Belt was born. The Back Belt is a wearable, adjustable lumbar support with a bladder in the rear that can inflate to the user’s desired level of comfort.
After working out a licensing arrangement with Dr. Grosso, Cole Media Group developed a production prototype using Dr. Grosso’s rough prototype as a guideline. Then, based on our expertise in marketing product through TV and retail, Cole Media Group decided to include additional functionality such as a pocket for hot and cold packs and a battery-operated vibration/massage mechanism.
Cole Media Group knew that the commercial needed to be compelling enough to get potential customers to pick up the phone, so a pitch by Dr. Grosso himself, actual testimonials, animations of the product and an irresistible product configuration were included in the spot. Also, on the telemarketing end, various upsells were presented to customers to help increase the average sale. As a result of these efforts, the commercial that went to air on national television proved to be a success.
After selling more than 200,000 Back Belts on TV, Cole Media Group moved to the catalog and retail marketplace. Because of the tremendous amount of branding derived from the direct response television campaign, hundreds of thousands of additional Back Belts were sold in retail stores like Walmart, Walgreen, Target and CVS.
